Wendy's Village is named after my mother, who struggled on her own for several years after getting pregnant at seventeen. Despite being a teen mom with no village nearby to support her, she always found a way to make things work. She had always been very skillful at cleaning so she decided to try her hand at cleaning houses since the schedule was flexible and she could bring the kids to work with her. Fast forward to almost 40 years later, she owns a successful and highly regarded cleaning company which she has now passed down to me, Konni. Since she laid the foundation of our company and gave it a solid foundation to stand on, starting this non profit was my way of paying that forward into the community.

Anyone who grew up with me and came to my mothers house will testify that she is everyone's second mother, whether they liked it or not. If you were under her roof, you had a curfew, you were fed, you were clean, and you were safe. Then if you hung around for any length of time, she's probably one of your biggest supporters still to this day. If you had a baby, she's gonna be at your baby shower. If you started a business, she's handing out your cards. If you post something on Facebook, she's the first to like it. She became the village she always wanted.

Now that I have my own clientele base established, I've been doing free cleanings for close friends and family that might be going through something in life and may need the extra help. It's the biggest way I can think of to help out in tough times with the skills I inherited from my mother. One Sunday when I was sitting in church, the pastor was discussing how our talents and skills aren't by accident. God gave us these gifts with a deeper purpose for them. These gifts are meant for serving Him. What better way to serve God than to serve others? Our pastor left us with the message to actively start using our talents to glorify God and I felt an undeniable urge to open up my free cleanings to the entire community.

After I've had a really stressful, chaotic, challenging day where nothing went according to plan or all of my hard work fell apart, I feel all of that slip away the second I walk into my home. It's a safe haven where I can rest and recover. Walking into a clean, fresh smelling house is a feeling everyone deserves on their hardest days. It doesn't solve all of our problems, but it makes them feel a little more manageable if only for a moment. It's no secret that life can be brutally unfair. It can take loved ones too soon or we might receive a medical diagnosis that changes everything, but you can always rely on your village to carry you through when you can't do it on your own. That's why we do what we do, as God's children it's our mission to come together and support one another in any way we can.
